Who is Pedro?

Pedro, who was born in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Tenerife, Canary Islands, began his professional football career at the local side of San Isidro. During the 2003–04 season, he scored 35 goals for their Juvenil club and also played for their first team in the Tercera División (third division). He began playing for Barcelona’s youth team when he was seventeen years old.

In addition to his speed and dribbling, he is well-known for his ability to convert on counter-attacks. Pedro scored 99 goals in 321 appearances across all competitions for Barcelona between 2008 and 2015, before joining Chelsea in 2015, where he scored 43 goals in 206 games and helped the club win the Premier League in 2017, the FA Cup in 2018, and the UEFA Europa League in 2019.

Pedro is currently the captain of the Spanish national team. In 2020, he signed a contract with Serie A team Roma. Over the course of his career, he has collected 26 major honors, including five La Liga championships and three UEFA Champions League triumphs. When he scored in every official club competition in a single season and in a single calendar year during the 2009–10 season, he made history.

He was the first player in history to accomplish this feat. He has also represented Spain at the Olympics. After being called up to the first squad for the 2008–09 preseason, Pedro showed early promise, scoring against Hibernian and the New York Red Bulls, respectively, in the first two games. On August 13, he made his UEFA Champions League debut, starting in a 4–0 victory over Wisla Kraków in the third qualifying round of the 2008–09 competition.

His first appearance in the group stage of that competition came on September 16th, when he came on as a substitute for Thierry Henry in a 3–1 victory over Sporting CP at home. After manager Pep Guardiola confirmed that Pedro would be promoted to the first team, the player responded with a breakthrough season in which he became the first player to score in every official club competition in a single season and also the first player to score in every official club competition in a single calendar year.

As the 2010–11 season got underway, Pedro had already cemented his place in Barcelona’s starting XI. On November 29, 2010, he scored the second goal in Barcelona’s legendary 5–0 home victory over Real Madrid, which propelled the club to the top of the La Liga standings. During the next month’s local derby against Espanyol, he scored twice to help his team to a 5–1 victory.

Despite scoring against Real Madrid in the second half of the final on April 20, 2011, Pedro’s goal was disallowed for offside, resulting in the team losing the match 0–1 in extra time. Against the same opponent, on 3 May, in the 2010–11 UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg, he scored his 21st official goal of the season, resulting in a 1–1 home draw (3–1 aggregate win).

In the Champions League final, he scored the opening goal against Manchester United, en route to the team’s eventual 3–1 victory. Pedro’s contract was extended by one year on July 5, 2011, bringing it to the end of 2016. His buyout clause has been increased from €90 million to €150 million. Even though he played less in 2011–12 with the acquisition of Alexis Sanchez, he finished the season with 13 official goals, including a brace in that season’s Copa del Rey final, a 3–0 victory over Athletic Bilbao.

He was also named to the Spanish Football Federation’s All-Star Team in 2012. Pedro scored a hat-trick against Rayo Vallecano on September 21, 2013, in a 4–0 victory for the home team. His third hat-trick came on December 22 against Getafe, when he scored all three goals in the first half and in only nine minutes to help Barcelona come back from a 0–2 deficit and win 5–2. He became the player in Barcelona history to score the fastest hat-trick in the club’s history.

Barça won the 2015 UEFA Champions League Final by defeating Juventus 3–1 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin on June 6, 2015, with Pedro coming on as a late substitute. It was the club’s sixth European Cup/Champions League triumph.

Barcelona became the first club in history to win the trifecta of domestic league, domestic cup, and European Cup on two occasions in the same season. Pedro, Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta, Xavi, Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets, and Dan Alves are the only players to have been a part of both treble-winning sides in their respective eras of football.

Pedro scored the winning goal as Barcelona defeated Sevilla 5–4 in the 2015 UEFA Super Cup final in Tbilisi, Georgia. It was his second win in a Super Cup, and it occurred in the 115th minute, just like his last victory in the same competition. Pedro began his professional career by making an impression with Barcelona B until 2009. He subsequently moved on to play in the top-tier Spanish league.

In the following two seasons, he made a total of 16 appearances until experiencing his breakout season, in which he appeared in 52 matches for the Blaugrana and scored 23 goals. His outstanding achievements during the season earned him the title of La Liga’s Breakthrough Player, as Barcelona won the UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, Supercopa de Espaa, and the La Liga in one season.

After losing his starting position to Neymar in the 2014-15 season, he signed a contract with Chelsea for the 2015-16 season. He helped the club win the Premier League title in the 2016 season and has established himself as one of the team’s most significant players.
