Who is Paul Dooley?

On February 22, 1928, in Parkersburg, West Virginia, Paul Dooley entered the world. Later, he explained that he was disappointed that there wasn’t more of a cultural environment where he grew up. Paul gorged himself on daily radio humor broadcasts. His first job out of school was as a cartoonist for the local newspaper, where he also ran a comic strip. Upon his discharge from the Navy in 1952, Dooley enrolled at West Virginia University to pursue a degree in acting.

Dooley relocated to the Big Apple in hopes of breaking into the New York theater scene. Dooley began his career with supporting roles but soon found steady employment on the New York stage. In 1962, because of his stand-up routines, he was invited to perform on The Tonight Show. Dooley was seen by legendary director Mike Nichols, who was at the time looking for actors for his Broadway production of “The Odd Couple.” Dooley replaced Art Carney as Felix Ungar after initially being cast as a poker partner. This part brought Dooley a lot of attention after the premiere of The Odd Couple on March 10, 1965. A few years later, he signed with the William Morris Agency and joined the Compass Players, a cabaret group that also included future director Mike Nichols.

Dooley has been a staple in Robert Altman’s films, and his performances as a variety of memorable characters have made him a household name. In 1978, he starred in Robert Altman’s BAFTA-nominated comic drama The Wedding, opposite Mia Farrow and Geraldine Chaplin. After working together on A Perfect Couple, Health, Popeye, O.C., Stiggs, etc., Dooley and Altman went on to become a dazzling directing-acting combo. The book “Health” was written by Dooley and Altman.

Dooley’s mother, Ruth Irene (née Barringer), was a housewife, and his father, Peter James Brown, worked at a factory when he was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia. As a young man, Dooley was included in the Parkersburg newspaper for his cartoon strip. He enlisted in the Navy and then discovered acting in college. Savannah Dooley is the only child he has with his wife, the author Winnie Holzman (born 1985). He uprooted to New York City and quickly became a theater regular.

Dooley has also dabbled in magic and clowning, and he spent five years as a stand-up comedian before joining the Compass Players and The Second City ensemble in New York City. He dabbled in various forms of entertainment, including writing. At one point, he wrote for The Electric Company and made cameo appearances in ads. Dooley has appeared in a wide variety of films, including Popeye, Sixteen Candles, and Breaking Away, and has also guest-starred on a wide range of television shows, such as My So-Called Life, Dream On, Grace Under Fire, Curb Your Enthusiasm, ALF (as Whizzer Deaver), and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (as Enabran Tain).

Besides Desperate Housewives, The Golden Girls, and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, he has also appeared in guest roles on other popular television series. While appearing on The Practice as an eccentric judge in 2000, he received an Emmy nomination for his performance. He also appeared in the infamous deleted scene from Little Shop of Horrors but was ultimately replaced by Jim Belushi. Huge, a 2010 ABC Family original sitcom, featured Dooley as the show’s fictional chief chef at Camp Victory, a weight loss camp.
