Who is Mario Mandžukić?

Mario Manduki was born on May 21st, 1986 in Skopje, Macedonia. He was a forward for the Croatian national team in his professional football career. As a result of his aggression, defensive contribution, and acrobatic abilities, he rose to prominence. He began his football career with his native team Marsonia, and after that, he played for two different clubs in Croatia’s capital city: first, NK Zagreb, and then, in 2007, Dinamo Zagreb, where he was the top scorer in the Prva HNL for the 2008–09 season.

A move to VfL Wolfsburg in 2010 was made possible by his prolific scoring for Schalke. Bayern Munich signed him after he had a strong showing at UEFA Euro 2012, where he was Germany’s equal top scorer. While playing for the club, he was the first Croatian to score in a Champions League final, winning the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and Champions League in his debut season.

Atlético Madrid recruited him for €19 million in 2014 after winning the domestic double with Bayern Munich the previous season. At Juventus, where he won the domestic double in each of his first three seasons, followed by another league victory the following year, he left Bayern in 2015. When he scored his second Champions League final goal in 2017, an overhead kick that arced beyond the goalkeeper, he won the UEFA Goal of the Season title for his efforts.

He signed with Al-Duhail in Qatar in December of 2019, but after a difficult time adjusting, Manduki called it quits in January of 2021 and returned to Italy, signing with AC Milan. Despite having two offers to sign as a free agent, he announced his retirement in September of the same year. Manduki made his international debut in November 2007 for Croatia under manager Slaven Bili.

Euro 2012, the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, as well as Euro 2016, were some of the important events he took part in with his national team. After Euro 2016, he retired from international football and hasn’t played since. He played for Croatia in 89 matches, scoring 33 goals in the process. He is the second most prolific scorer in Croatian national team history, behind only Davor users.

After winning Croatian Footballer of the Year honors in 2012 and 2013, he won it again in 2013. Manduki was called up to the Croatian national team after a string of impressive displays in the 2007–08 Prva HNL, as well as Dinamo’s UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup fixtures. He made his international debut for Croatia on November 17, 2007, against Macedonia. In a 4–1 home loss to England in a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying match on September 10, 2008, he scored his first goal for Croatia.

During the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, Manduki’s role on the national team grew. In June 2011, he equalized against Georgia in Stadion Poljud with his first goal of the campaign. In the last qualifying encounter against Latvia, he scored again with a header. Croatia had to play Turkey in the Euro 2012 play-offs after placing second in their group.

Before this match was played, Croatia astonished the home crowd by winning 0–3 with two goals from Manduki and a header by IRI. Manduki was paired with Everton’s Nikica Jelavic as one of manager Slaven Bili’s two first-choice strikers for Croatia at UEFA Euro 2012. He had two goals and an assist in Croatia’s 3–1 triumph against the Republic of Ireland, as well as a goal and an assist in the country’s subsequent 1–1 draw with Italy.

Croatia lost in the group stage, but he was the tournament’s joint top scorer with Mario Balotelli and Fernando Torres, as well as future Bayern Munich colleague Mario Gómez. Two assists in the first two matches of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification, against Macedonia in Zagreb and Belgium in Brussels, put him on the map early on. In Osijek, he opened the scoring against Wales.

Croatia went into the encounter against Serbia with a 1-0 lead thanks to a goal by Manduki. In Belgrade, he also scored in the second meeting between the teams. Manduki gave Croatia the lead in the second leg of their play-off match against Iceland in Zagreb, resulting in a 2–0 victory for Croatia. A dangerous high tackle on Jóhann Berg Gudmundsson, however, resulted in the Icelandic midfielder’s left knee being injured and earned him a straight red card.

As a member of Croatia’s World Cup roster, Manduki was given a one-match suspension for the team’s opening encounter against the host nation in So Paulo on June 12, 2014. On the 18th of June, he made his World Cup debut, scoring twice in a 4–0 victory over Cameroon to earn the “Man of the Match” award. Manduki declared his retirement from international football on August 14th, 2018.

He retired as Croatia’s second-highest goalscorer in team history after scoring 33 times. Manduki expressed the following regarding his World Cup silver medal in his statement: We’ve realized our goals, made history, and received unimaginable support along the way. My most cherished professional memory will be of that month, which included a warm reception in Zagreb, Slavonski Brod, and throughout Croatia.

This has been my favorite homecoming to my country and the most lovely journey with the national team. Aside from being overjoyed and fulfilled, I’m also tremendously proud of the silver I’ve worked so hard for over the course of the last year and a half to achieve. As far as retiring is concerned, there isn’t a certain time or place.

To play for Croatia till one’s death would be ideal; there is no greater sense of accomplishment, but I believe my time has come for me to retire from the game. I’ve done everything I could for Croatia, and I’m proud to say that my efforts have contributed to the country’s largest sporting success yet.
