Who is Mapou Yanga-M’Biwa?

Mapou Yanga-M’Biwa was born in Bangui, Central African Republic, but migrated to France with her family when she was eight years old, growing up in Port-de-Bouc, Bouches du Rhône, a town not far from Marseille, where she currently resides.

A young player for Montpellier since 2005, Yanga-Mbiwa made his professional football debut on 23 February 2007 in a 1–0 away defeat to Bastia, in which he played the complete 90 minutes and was shown a yellow card. The season ended with him signing his first professional contract, committing to a three-year deal that would keep him in the league until 2010. On July 1, he was formally promoted to the senior squad and given the number 3 jersey.

Although Yanga-Mbiwa was only 18 years old at the time of his promotion to the first team in September 2007, Montpellier manager Rolland Courbis elevated Yanga-Mbiwa to the starting lineup for the remainder of the 2007–08 season, and he has remained there since. He did not disappoint, appearing in a total of 41 appearances and scoring one goal in the process.

Following Montpellier’s 1–0 victory against Ajaccio on August 31, Mbiwa appeared in every match the team played, including the Coupe de la Ligue and Coupe de France fixtures, in which Montpellier advanced to the Round of 16 and Round of 32, respectively, of both competitions. Montpellier won 2–1 against FC Gueugnon on May 12, 2008, thanks to a late winner from him in injury time.

It was his sole goal of the season. In 2008–09, Yanga-Mbiwa was already a regular starter, and despite competition from fellow teenagers Mickael Nelson and Abdel El Kaoutari, he continued to impress, appearing in 33 total matches and scoring one goal against Anger in a 3–3 tie that ended up becoming a penalty shootout in injury time. Only seconds before, Anger had taken the lead on a goal from Malik Couturier.

The equalizer followed only seconds later. Yanga-Mbiwa suffered an extensive injury against Brest on March 20, 2009, while Montpellier was in a tight battle for promotion. He was out for about two months as a result of the injury. Montpellier was promoted to Ligue 1 on the final day of the season after he returned to the team on May 8, 2009. He participated in the team’s final four matches, assisting them in their promotion.

Despite the club’s promotion to Ligue 1 and the approaching start of his prison sentence, manager Rolland Courbis resigned from his job, and René Girard was appointed as his replacement. Girard made it obvious that one of his many priorities was to keep Yanga-Mbiwa at the club, and on June 2, 2009, the team achieved that goal by signing the player to a two-year contract extension that will take him until 2012.

Yanga-Mbiwa made his Ligue 1 debut in the club’s season-opening encounter against Paris Saint-Germain, where he played the entire match and helped the team to a 1–1 tie. After agreeing to a contract extension with the club on May 12, 2010, Yanga-Mbiwa was able to add an additional year to his deal on that date.

Yanga-Mbiwa completed his deal to Newcastle United on January 22, 2013, for a total of £8.5 million. He committed to a five-and-a-half-year contract with St James’ Park, where he wore the number 13 shirt during his first season there. On 29 January 2013, he made his Newcastle United debut as a second-half replacement in a 2–1 victory over Aston Villa at St James’ Park.

Yanga-Mbiwa joined the Italian side of Roma on a season-long loan on September 1, 2014, with the option to make the transfer permanent for an additional £5.5 million on top of the £1 million loan fee. On September 17, he made his professional debut as a 77th-minute substitute in a Champions League encounter against CSKA Moscow in Moscow. Four days later, he started his first Serie A game, a 2–0 victory over Cagliari, in which he made his debut.

As of January 27, 2015, Newcastle United confirmed that Yanga-Mbiwa had agreed to sign a permanent contract with Roma after meeting a contractual criterion stipulated in the teams’ loan agreement with the Italian club. After scoring his only goal for Roma in a 2-1 win over club rival Lazio in the Derby Della Capitale on May 25, 2015, Yanga-Mbiwa was named to the 2015–16 UEFA Champions League squad.

The win secured Roma’s second-place finish in the 2014–15 Serie A season, as well as a place in the 2015–16 UEFA Champions League. Yanga-Mbiwa completed a transfer to the French club, Lyon, on August 14, 2015, for a cost of €8 million, with a bonus fee of up to €2 million potential. On May 8, he scored two goals to help Lyon defeat Monaco, bringing his first season to a close with two goals. Lyon canceled his contract on July 1, 2020, after he had played 72 matches and scored two goals for the club during his five-year tenure with the club.

Yanga-Mbiwa is a dual citizen of France and the Central African Republic, making him eligible to represent both countries in international competition. He was also eligible to represent Cameroon in international competitions. In 2009, he was called up to the France under-21 team by coach Erick Mombaerts for their 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification matches against Malta on 9 October and Belgium on 13 October.

He did not play for either country’s youth teams, but on 1 October 2009, he was called up to the France under-21 team by coach Erick Mombaerts for their UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualification matches against Malta on 9 October and Belgium on 13 October. Yanga-Mbiwa had been nominated to France’s preliminary squad for the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament on the 15th of May, 2012. Coach Laurent Blanc, on the other hand, named his final team on May 29th, and Yanga-Mbiwa was left out of it.
