Who is Kwadwo Asamoah?

Asamoah was born in Accra, Ghana, to parents from the United States and Ghana. Sly Tetteh was discovered while playing soccer for Kamara’s local affiliate team and was passed along to the late Alhaji Sly, by the scout Mr. Charles Mensah Gipson. He signed with Bellinzona of Switzerland and spent the 2007–08 season on loan at Torino of Italy. When Asamoah met Abena, he fell in love with her straight away and the two married.

They have two children: Jason, a son, and Jada, a daughter. His donation of $20,000 to Kumasi’s Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in 2020 would help the hospital fight the deadly COVID-19 virus. Since joining the Italian club Udinese in 2008, he has consistently performed well enough to earn him a move to Juventus in 2012, where he contributed greatly to the club’s six consecutive Serie A titles between 2013 and 2018, among other achievements, despite his playing time at the club is limited because of various injuries throughout his time there.

In 2018, he joined Inter Milan. He has played for Ghana at four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and two FIFA World Cups on the international stage. Udinese signed Asamoah in June 2008, and he quickly made a name for himself as a pivotal player for both the club and his country. The major European clubs became interested in him after he performed well in the 2010 World Cup and Africa Cup Nations.

Udinese colleague Mauricio Isla, like Asamoah, joined Juventus on co-ownership agreements in July 2012. Juventus paid €9 million for half of Asamoah’s contract with Udinese to acquire him. On August 11, 2012, he made his Juventus debut against Napoli in the 2012 Supercoppa Italiana, scoring a goal in a 4–2 extra-time victory.

Due to his strong performance against Napoli, Juventus coach Antonio Conte decided to play him in the opening league encounter of the 2012–13 season against Parma on 25 August: he had an early impact by setting up Stephan Lichtsteiner’s goal in a 2–0 win at home.

In a 3–1 away league win over Genoa on September 16, he scored his first goal for his new team. That season, Juventus went on to capture Serie A’s top honors. In June 2013, Juventus purchased Asamoah entirely and signed a four-year contract with him.

In a 1–0 home win over Fiorentina on March 9, 2014, Asamoah scored an important goal for Juventus in the Serie A title defense and the Supercoppa Italiana that season. Following a serious knee injury in the 10th league match of 2014–15 against Empoli on November 1st, Asamoah missed most of the season.

Only after Juventus’ Serie A triumph at the end of the season was it possible for him to rejoin the club and resume training. As a result, he missed the Coppa Italia final win against Lazio for Juventus due to his absence from training. On May 23, 2015, he made his comeback against Napoli, winning 3–1.

After a 1–1 draw with Melbourne Victory at Melbourne’s Melbourne Cricket Ground (Melbourne Victory won 4–3 on penalties), Asamoah took the field for Juventus as captain for the 2016 International Champions Cup Australian version opener on July 23.

He had limped off the pitch in Palermo the day before with a sprained right knee and examinations at J-Medical revealed he had torn the medial meniscus ligament completely, and it was confirmed that Asamoah would be out for six weeks on September 25. According to reports, Asamoah declined to extend his deal with Juventus when it expired in June of that year. On March 17, he made his 150th Juventus appearance in a 0–0 Serie A draw at home to S.P.A.L.

For the years 2010 and 2012, Asamoah received the CAF Most Promising African Player award, and he was named Ghana Player of the Year twice. According to Bloomberg, Asamoah was the world’s 27th best player in 2013. In 2008, Asamoah made his international debut for the Ghana national team, the Black Stars, as a member of the midfield.

It was a bronze and silver medal he won at the Africa Cup of Nations for Ghana in 2008 and 2010, as well as in the 2012 and 2013 editions. He has also represented Ghana at two FIFA World Cups: the 2010 and the 2014 editions. He’s an energetic and versatile midfielder who can play in a variety of positions due to his speed, strength, stamina, technical ability (particularly his ability to read the game), and tactical intelligence.

Although Asamoah serves as the team’s primary ball-winner, these qualities allow him to be equally effective on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. When playing for Juventus, Asamoah has mostly been employed as a left-sided fullback, wingback, or wide-midget; however, prior to joining the club, he had also played in the center as a defensive midfielder or as a central, box-to-box or attacking midget.

He has also played in the “muzzle” role. Along with being a physically gifted footballer, he also has excellent vision and the ability to make attacking runs and get into good offensive positions from which he can create chances for teammates with through balls or deliveries into the area from the wing. He is also an excellent passer, a potent long-range striker, and a deft handler of the ball.
