Who is Jordi Alba?

Alba was born in the Catalan city of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat in 1983. He began his playing career as a left-winger while still a teenager at Barcelona, but he was cut from the team because he was too small. His next stop was the nearby Cornellà and he spent nearly two years there before making the €6,000 move to Valencia, where he finished his playing career.

Alba spent the 2008–09 season on loan at Segunda División club Gimnàstic Tarragona, where he made 22 starts and helped the reserves earn promotion from Tercera División. Alba had a brief professional run with Barcelona before being released due to his perceived inadequacy.

He relocated to Valencia after joining Cornellà’s team. Since his return to the Catalan club in 2012, he has amassed a total of sixteen major honours with the organization, including five La Liga titles, five Copas del Rey, and one UEFA Champions League title. In 2012, he rejoined the group.

Having appeared in 23 games and scored one goal while representing Spain at the youth level, Alba was called up to the senior squad in 2011. At the 2012 UEFA Euro Championship, he was a key member of the team, and he has also played in the FIFA World Cups of 2014, 2018, as well as the 2016 and 2020 European Championships. Barcelona Alba agreed to a €14 million transfer fee with Barcelona and a five-year contract on June 28, 2012.

His first match for the club was against Real Sociedad on August 19, where he played the full 90 minutes in a 5–1 home win. Alba made his Blaugrana debut on October 20, 2012, opening the scoring in a 5–4 victory over Deportivo La Corua with his own goal. He then scored in the 93rd minute of a 2–1 win over Celtic at home in the Champions League group stage.

On March 12th, Alba scored his fifth goal of the season in the Champions League round of 16 against AC Milan, completing a 4–0 home win for Barcelona after a 0–2 first-leg loss at the San Siro, when his team became the first in competition history to overcome such a deficit. He won the league title in his first season at Barcelona, helping Tito Vilanova’s team reclaim the title they had lost to Real Madrid the year before.

A new five-year contract with a new €150 million buyout clause was reached between Alba and its shareholders on June 2nd, 2015. Four days later, he started for Real Madrid in the Champions League final against Juventus in Berlin’s Olympiastadion, helping the team to a 3–1 victory. With 38 appearances across all competitions and one goal, he helped Barça win the treble in his first season with the club.

A Lionel Messi through the pass in the 97th minute of the final against Sevilla gave Alba the second Copa del Rey of his career on May 22nd, 2016, in a 2–0 extra-time victory at the Vicente Calderón in Madrid. A new five-year contract with Alba and a new €500 million buyout clause were signed on March 11th, 2019. Due to hamstring and muscle injuries, Alba missed half of the 2019–20 season’s games, or 12 out of 24. With his club winning the Copa del Rey in 2020–21, Alba had his best season yet, scoring 5 goals and providing 13 assists across all competitions.

After Lionel Messi left the club before the 2021–22 season, Jordi Alba was named the club’s fourth captain on August 9, 2021. Alba played in all four games as Spain won the gold medal at the 2009 Mediterranean Games and represented Spain at the 2008 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. The FIFA U-20 World Cup in Egypt in 2009 was also a highlight for him as a player. For the final two UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying matches against the Czech Republic and Scotland, Alba was called up to the full national team for the first time on 30 September 2011.

It was his impressive debut that cemented his position as a serious contender to replace Joan Capdevila as La Roja’s regular left-back in the long term, and he was also named to the Spanish under-23 national team for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

When Vicente del Bosque led Spain to the Euro 2012 championship in Poland and Ukraine, Alba was a key member of his country’s squad and appeared in all of the tournament’s games. In the 2–0 quarterfinal win over France, he set up Xabi Alonso with a cross that opened the scoring. The second goal he scored in Spain’s 4–0 win over Italy came after he raced onto a through ball from Xavi in the final.

Additionally, Alba was chosen to represent the United States at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, which will be held in Brazil. During the tournament, he appeared in all four games and scored twice in Nigeria’s 3–0 rout. During the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Alba played three times for Del Bosque’s squad as the defending champions were eliminated in the group stage.

He was also selected for the 2018 World Cup squad under Julen Lopetegui and the UEFA Euro 2020 squad under Luis Enrique. Alba took over as captain after Sergio Busquets went down with the Coronavirus and had to be sidelined for the time being.
