Who is Jill Scott?

A poetic R&B powerhouse who handles slower, sensual material and brilliant songs of pride and self-empowerment with equal proficiency, Jill Scott launched herself at the beginning of the millennium with the Top 20 and multi-platinum Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds, Vol. 1 (2000). (2000). This debut also resulted in four Grammy nominations, including one for Best New Artist, an indication of the promise the vocalist has fulfilled and overshot throughout her career.

After a pair of Top Ten, gold-selling sequels in the Words and Sounds series, Beautifully Human (2004) and The Real Thing (2007), and a Grammy win for the latter album’s “Cross My Mind,” Scott topped the Billboard 200 with her fourth and fifth LPs, The Light of the Sun (2011) and Woman (2015). (2015). Her extensive collaborative work is highlighted by three other Grammy-winning recordings: the Roots’ “You Got Me,” which she co-wrote, in addition to George Benson and Al Jarreau’s version of “God Bless the Child,” and Lupe Fiasco’s “Daydreamin,'” both of which feature her vocals.

Her extensive concurrent work as an actor includes many Tyler Perry productions, prominent roles in programs such as The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, and Black Panther, and an NAACP Image Award-winning role in Sins of the Mother. The Roots Come Alive From North Philadelphia, born and reared, Jill Scott planned on becoming a high school English teacher. However, she left behind her secondary education studies at Temple University to pursue theatre, joined a local troupe, and finally secured a role in a Canadian production of Rent.

Back in her hometown, while performing poetry at the October Gallery, she drew the attention of the Roots’ Questlove. Asked by the drummer if she composed music, Scott responded yes — which she later revealed was a lie — and subsequently became a co-composer of the Roots’ “You Got Me.”

Scott was also the initially featured vocalist, but MCA, the Roots’ label, ordered that the group record instead with the established Erykah Badu. Issued as a single in January 1999, “You Got Me” became a Top 40 pop smash. Although it didn’t feature her vocals, Scott did perform the song live with The Roots, as chronicled on The Roots Come Alive, released that November. The studio version went on to win a Grammy for Best Rap Duo or Group Performance. Scott did not get a songwriters’ award.

Scott’s name appeared on the back of Will Smith’s Millennium two weeks after The Roots Come Alive came out. She sang the chorus on “The Rain,” co-produced by Smith’s partner, DJ Jazzy Jeff, and signed to Steve McKeever’s Epic-distributed Hidden Beach label. After working with Jeff, the Roots, and other Philly residents like Dre & Vidal and Carvin Haggins, Scott released Who Is Jill Scott? in July 2000.

Words and Sounds 1 It peaked at number 17 on the Billboard 200 and number two on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart that year. Its biggest hit, “Gettin’ in the Way,” established the tone for Scott’s career, hitting #3 on the Adult R&B chart. For “Gettin’ in the Way,” Scott was nominated for three Grammys: best new artist, best R&B album, and best female R&B vocal performance.

“A Long Walk,” from the album, missed the Top 40 but reached #10 R&B/hip-hop, earning Scott his second consecutive R&B Vocal Performance nomination. Experience: Jill Scott 826+, a live and studio album (including a soaring 4hero duet), came out in November. Scott was nominated for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for her nine-minute, three-movement rendition of “He Loves Me (Lyzel in E Flat).”

Beautifully Human and The Real Thing, the next two volumes in the Words and Sounds trilogy, debuted in the Top Five on the Billboard 200 in August 2004 and September 2007. “Cross My Mind” was Scott’s first top ten Adult R&B hit, and it earned him a Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance, as well as nominations for Best R&B Album and R&B Vocal Performance, both for “Whatever.” “God Bless the Child,” a collaboration with George Benson and Al Jarreau, won Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance at the Grammys, and spawned the Adult R&B hits “Hate on Me” and “My Love.”

“Hate on Me” was nominated for Best R&B Album and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, while Lupe Fiasco’s “Daydreamin'” won Best Urban/Alternative Performance. Before and after Beautifully Human, she sang at Dave Chappelle’s Block Party. Also, the Roots’ “You Got Me” got a commercial distribution on Home Grown! Scott wouldn’t record another album for over a decade, but she was busy acting. Live in Paris+ helped Hidden Beach cope with their star’s absence.

Supporting performances in Hounddog and Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married? led to a busy 2010 highlighted by Black Panther and the film Sins of the Mother. Following more than a dozen nominations in music and other acting categories, Scott received an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie, Mini-Series, or Dramatic Special.

Scott returned in June 2011 with her fourth proper album, The Light of the Sun, via Warner Bros. It topped the Billboard 200 and Adult R&B Songs Top Ten, with “So in Love” featuring Anthony Hamilton and “Blessed” both charting at #1.

Between Scott LPs, four years passed. Her most prominent musical appearance during this time was on Robert Glasper Experiment’s “Calls,” in which she portrayed Dee Dee Brown, James Brown’s second wife. Assisted by the Top Ten Adult R&B songs “Fool’s Gold,” “Back Together,” and “Can’t-Wait,” Woman by Atlantic became Scott’s second number one album. Hidden Beach continued to release catalog releases, after remix anthologies like Golden Moments in 2015 and By Popular Demand in 2018
