Who is Elisabeth Shue?

On October 6, 1963, in Wilmington, Delaware, USA, Elisabeth Shue entered the world. Her mother, Anne Brewster (née Wells), and her father, James William Shue, were both professionals; Anne worked for the “Chemical Banking Corporation,” while James was a lawyer and real estate developer. Elisabeth has both German and English ancestry.

She and her three brothers—William, Andrew, and John—grew up in South Orange, New Jersey.  Due to her father’s second marriage, she also has two half-siblings: Jenna and Harvey Shue. She finished high school at Maplewood, New Jersey’s “Columbia High School” in 1982. She went on to ‘Wellesley College’ after finishing high school. Simultaneously, she started appearing in ads to help fund her education.

She began her acting career while still a student at “Harvard University,” which she transferred to in 1985 but left before completing her degree due to her commitments in 1988. In 1988, while on a family trip, her older brother William drowned. Her second attempt at “Harvard” began in 1997, and she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in political science in 2000. The acting was an early passion for Elisabeth Shue. As a student, she found work in commercials. Afterward, she became the public figurehead for companies including Burger King, De Beers, and Hellmann’s.

She co-starred with Ralph Macchio in the 1984 hit picture “The Karate Kid.” In the same year, she also starred on ABC’s ‘Call to Glory’ as the teenage daughter of a military family. She made her film debut in the British horror thriller “Link” in 1986. Her breakthrough part came the following year in “Adventures in Babysitting”. In the 1988 film “Cocktail,” she co-starred with Tom Cruise. She portrayed Jennifer Parker in the sequel to the 1985 science fiction film Back to the Future the following year. Her subsequent appearance in the 1990 sequel “Back to the Future Part III” was likewise her work.

She made her Broadway debut in May 1990, at the Lincoln Center Theatre, in the production of “Some American Abroad.” She had cameos in two comedies that year: “Soapdish” and “The Marrying Man.” Birth and After Birth, a play by Tina Howe, featured her Broadway debut in 1993. She had a supporting role in the fantasy comedy-drama Heart and Souls, released the same year.

‘Leaving Las Vegas,’ starring Elisabeth Shue and Nicolas Cage, was released in 1995 and followed a prostitute’s life. She received numerous accolades for her performance and was even nominated for an “Academy Award” for her efforts.

After establishing her credibility, she was cast in a variety of roles. In 1996, she had a starring role in the suspense film The Trigger Effect. She had an appearance in the next year’s ‘Deconstructing Harry,’ a comedy directed by Woody Allen. She made an appearance on season seven of HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm” in 2009. She then starred as “Sheriff Julie Forester” in the 2013 horror film Piranha 3D.

She made an appearance in “House at the End of the Street”, written and directed by Mark Tonderai. She had supporting roles in two more films released in the same year. That same year, she also began portraying ‘Julie Finlay’ on ‘CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,’ beginning with the show’s twelfth season. She made her film debut in 2014’s “Behaving Badly.” During the 2015 season, she appeared as a special guest in an episode of the comedy series Blunt Talk.

The sports comedy film “Battle of the Sexes,” starring Steve Carell and Emma Stone, included her as a supporting character in 2017. She portrayed the title character, Lucy Kersey, in Eli Roth’s 2018 update of the 1974 action classic Death Wish.
