Who is Debra Jo Rupp?

Debra Jo Rupp was born on February 24, 1951, in Glendale, California, but her conservative parents raised her and her two sisters as Southern Baptists in Boxford, Massachusetts. She went to Boxford’s ‘Masconomet Regional High School,’ where she graduated in 1969. Debra’s parents were adamantly opposed to her pursuing a career in acting. As a result, she was moved to New York to attend the University of Rochester, New York, which did not offer any theatre classes at the time.

Fortunately, the university launched a dramatics department in her freshman year. As a member of Drama House, a small theatrical club at school, she took acting classes and participated in on-campus dramatic activities. Debra graduated with a B.A. in 1974 and, on the advice of her tutors, proceeded to New York to begin her acting career.

Debra Jo Rupp is a single woman who splits her time between Los Angeles and Lee, Massachusetts. Debra Jo Rupp is an excellent cook, albeit her preference is for grilling rather than baking. Her unique clam dip has made her renowned. Rupp’s mother was finally convinced why her daughter was so passionate about acting after seeing Angela Lansbury in Sweeny Todd on Broadway. Rupp is a major gardener. She enjoys living in the country with her two dogs and culinary friends.

Debra Jo Rupp occupied herself with theatre acts and commercial appearances after arriving in New York City. Helen, a cheating husband’s wife, was her character in ‘Second Verse,’ a one-act comedy by Sharon Tipsword in a Nat Horne Theater theatre festival in 1980. Her first television appearance came six years later, in 1980, in the daytime soap ‘All My Children,’ in which she played Shelia, a topless dancer.

Debra played a young bride in A. R. Gurney’s 1985 production of ‘The Middle Ages’ at the Olympia Dukakis-founded Whole Theater Company in Montclair, New Jersey. The New York Times’ Walter Goodman gave her a glowing review for her portrayal of a neglected young wife in Arthur Laurents’ ‘The Time of the Cuckoo.’ Other notable performances during this time include Terrence McNally’s two-character piece ‘Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune’ and Cynthia Heimel’s ‘A Girl’s Guide to Chaos,’ which earned her critical accolades from famed caricaturist Al Hirschfield.

Debra devoted herself to acting on the stage and in television productions throughout the 1980s decade. Finally, in 1988, she won her first leading role in a feature film when she was cast as Miss Patterson, the shy secretary to Josh Baskins (Tom Hanks) in the comedy ‘Big.’ Debra returned to New York City in 1990 to play ‘Mae’ alongside Kathleen Turner in the Eugene O’Neill Theatre production of ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.’ In the early 1990s, she appeared in a number of TV shows, including ‘Davis Rules with Randy Quaid,’ ‘Phenom,’ ‘Family Matters,’ ‘Blossom,’ and ‘L.A. She played Dotty Otley in Michael Frayn’s ‘Noises Off’ (2004) and a wacky mother in Michael Frayn’s ‘Ring Round the Moon’ (2006), both in Massachusetts. In June 2007, Debra starred as Valerie in Judith Ivey’s Second Stage Theatre production of ‘The Butcher of Baraboo.’ In August of the same year, she appeared in a revival of ‘Morning’s at Seven,’ a 1939 Paul Osborn drama, at the ‘Berkshire Theatre Festival.’ Rupp made an appearance in an episode of the popular criminal thriller ‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit after ‘That ’70s Show’ finished in 2006.
