Who is Debbie Allen?

Deborah Kaye Allen was born on January 16, 1950, in Houston, Texas, to poet Vivian Ayers and dentist Arthur Allen. She was the third child of the couple, who had previously won a Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Allen began dancing when she was three years old. By the age of four, she had made the decision to pursue a career as a professional performer, and her parents put her in dancing courses when she was five years old.

Allen’s parents split in 1957, leaving Allen’s mother, Vivian, to be the primary caretaker for Allen and her three younger siblings. The Allen children were supposed to complete writing tasks under Vivian’s supervision in order to promote their creativity, and each of them was also expected to help with home chores in order to gain their independence.

Allen has earned numerous awards and distinctions for her work, including an honorary doctorate from the North Carolina School of the Arts, where she had been rejected at the time of her initial application. She also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the American Women in Radio and Television’s Lifetime Achievement Award for her contributions to the industry. Allen Nixon is married to Norm Nixon, a former NBA player. They are the parents of three children. She was previously married to Winnifred Wilford, with whom she had two children.

After receiving a Tony nomination, she was cast as a dancing instructor in the film Fame, which she co-wrote with her husband (1980). With Allen’s participation, the film was turned into a popular television spin-off in 1982, for which he received three Emmy Awards for choreography. Debbie Allen Dance Academy, located in Los Angeles, was established in 2001 by Allen.

She also made guest appearances on television shows such as In the House and Grey’s Anatomy, among others. Allen’s mother instilled in her children the importance of trying new things. Vivian invited Allen and her siblings to live with her in Mexico in 1960, on the spur of the moment. According to Allen, who wrote about the incident in the Washington Post, “she didn’t know anybody in Mexico.”

“She couldn’t communicate since she didn’t speak Spanish. The woman was looking for a different degree of expertise… That is something I greatly admire.” Her family relocated to Texas after nearly two years in Mexico, where Allen auditioned for and was accepted into the Houston Ballet School when she was twelve years old.

Despite the fact that her academic achievement was sufficient for entrance, the school denied her admission on the basis of the color of her skin. An ambitious dancer named Allen was surreptitiously recruited by a Russian instructor at the academy after witnessing him perform a year earlier. By the time the admissions department became aware of the situation, they had been so impressed by Allen’s abilities that they decided to allow her to remain a student.

Allen’s anti-segregation efforts, however, would not come to a stop there. She was chosen to demonstrate a technique for other potential students at the North Carolina School of the Arts when she was sixteen, following what she felt to be a successful audition for the school. Later, however, her application was rejected on the grounds that her body was “unsuited” for ballet — a complaint that is frequently used to deter Black dancers from pursuing careers in the discipline.

Allen was devastated by the rejection, and she spent the rest of her high school years concentrating solely on her schoolwork. The son of a teacher, Allen attended Howard University and graduated with honors from the college in 1971, with a bachelor’s of arts in dramatic literature. Immediately following graduation from college, she made her way to Broadway, where she landed a number of chorus roles before making her television debut in commercials and television series in 1972.

Allen had a brief appearance on the television screen in 1979 when she was cast in a small role in Alex Haley’s epic television mini-series Roots: The Next Generation, which explored race relations in the United States. Allen, on the other hand, shot to fame in 1980 after starring as Anita in a Broadway version of West Side Story. In addition to a Tony Award nomination, her performance garnered her the critical recognition she needed to gain a role as a dance instructor in the film Fame (1980).

Fame was nominated for multiple Academy Awards and was instrumental in launching a dance craze across the United States. Allen co-starred in a blockbuster television spin-off in 1982, which capitalized on the film’s astronomical box office success. Allen received three Emmy Awards for choreography for her work on the show, which she credits to her role as choreographer.

As a result of the cancellation of Fame, Allen went on to star in Bob Fosse’s revival of the musical Sweet Charity, for which she was awarded a Tony. Then, in 1988, Allen took the reins behind the camera for the Cosby Show spinoff, A Different World, in which her sister, Phylicia Rashad, had appeared as Clare Huxtable, the mother of the Cosby family on the popular television series.

Allen, who had helped the sitcom reach its peak in ratings, continued to produce and direct the show until it was canceled in 1993. Debbie Allen Dance Academy, located in Los Angeles, California, was established in 2001 by Allen. The non-profit school provides a full dance program to students ranging in age from 4 to 18 years old, regardless of their financial circumstances.
