Following his one-year contract with Cagliari, in 2018, he returned to Shakhtar as an assistant manager before signing a new contract with the club for 2019.

Having made his Croatian debut in November 2002, Srna is Croatia’s second-most-capped player with 134 appearances, having represented his country in the FIFA World Cups of 2006 and 2014, along with UEFA Euro 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016. Slaven Bili, the team’s then-manager, named him captain in 2009, and he served in that capacity until 2016 when he retired from international football and was succeeded as captain by Luka Modric.

With 536 appearances under his belt, he is Shakhtar’s all-time leading scorer. He was known as the “Icon of Shakhtar” by the locals. Srna turned down offers from Chelsea and Bayern Munich while at Shakhtar because of his allegiance to the club. Similarly, Srna is regarded as a top-tier player in Europe in the twenty-first century. He was compared to Cafu because of his playing style.

In his youth, numerous Croatian scouts noticed Srna’s potential. Hajduk Split later acquired his services as his abilities became increasingly sought after by the Croatian powerhouse. He won the Croatian Cup in 1999–2000 and 2002–2003 for Hajduk, as well as the Prva HNL in 2000–01. While in Europe, they competed in four rounds of the UEFA Cup (1999-2000), two rounds of the European Cup (2001-2002), and three rounds of the European Cup (2002-2003).

Along with his two goals against Bulgaria, he also had one in Croatia’s 2–2 home tie with Bulgaria and one in their 3–1 road win over Iceland. Later, Srna played a key role in each of Croatia’s three World Cup games in 2006. After scoring Croatia’s first goal in the infamous “Graham Poll three-yellow card” mismatch against Australia, which ended 2–2, he was hailed and remembered for his magnificent 30-yard free-kick.

Croatia finished third in the group stage with only two points because he missed a penalty against Japan in the previous match, resulting in a 0–0 tie. Srna, along with colleagues Boko Balaban and Ivica Oli, was kicked out of the Croatian team for a Euro 2008 qualifying match against Russia in September 2006. Srna was hailed as the contest’s hero after scoring a free-kick into the right corner of the net after being introduced as a substitute against Macedonia in a Euro 2008 qualifying match.

In the 88th minute, he crossed the ball for teammate Eduardo to score and give Croatia a late triumph. In Croatia’s hard-fought away win over Israel, he also scored Croatia’s equalizer, which ultimately concluded 4–3 in favor of Croatia. However, his overall contribution to the team’s offensive compensated for Srna’s penalty miss against Estonia, which Croatia promptly exploited to win 2–0.

Srna was unexpectedly included in Serbia’s 23-man team for the current tournament after helping his country qualify for Euro 2008 with an impressive qualifying campaign. Serbian striker Srna opened the scoring for Croatia in the 24th minute of their 2–1 Group B win over Germany on June 12. In Croatia’s ill-fated penalty shootout against Turkey in the quarterfinals, he was the only one to score.

After the game, Srna appeared to be trying to contain his emotions as a result of Croatia’s valiant but ultimately unsuccessful attempts. Croatia finished third behind Spain and Italy at the 2012 World Cup, with Srna starting all three games as the captain. The event went down to the wire, with Italy and Spain advancing to the championship match.

Srna’s 100th cap came against South Korea in a friendly at Craven Cottage, London, on February 6th, 2013, and he now has the same number of caps as Dario mi. Srna also scored his 20th goal for Serbia in that game. Srna featured in Croatia’s opening group stage encounter against Turkey at Euro 2016 in France as team captain once more. He returned to Croatia shortly after the game, though, to learn that his father had died during the game.

After the competition, he returned to France to complete it as per his father’s final wish before he died. Croatia made it to the quarterfinals of the competition before falling to Portugal on a Ricardo Quaresma extra-time goal.
