Who is Big Freedia?

Big Freedia is the stage name of American rapper Freddie Ross Jr., who was born on January 28, 1978. She is most recognized for her work in the New Orleans subgenre of hip hop known as bounce music. Freedia is recognized for playing a role in helping to promote the latter genre, which, since its inception in the early 1990s, has existed primarily in the underground. Freedia isn’t sure which pronouns to use, despite the fact that she considers herself to be a gay male.

Around the same time that she began her professional performance career around 1999, Freedia began her singing career by joining the choir at the local Baptist church known as Pressing Onward M.B.C. Queen Diva was Freedia’s first studio album, and it was released in the year 2003.  2009 was the year that she was introduced to the general public for the first time.

\In March of 2011, her album Big Freedia Hitz Vol. 1 from 2010 was re-released on Scion A/V, along with a number of music videos. New Orleans, Louisiana, is where Freddie Ross first made his home. She has stated that music has always been an important part of her life, and when she was younger, she participated in choir and took piano lessons. Her mother introduced her to musicians like Patti LaBelle, and she was also affected by disco diva Sylvester, Michael Jackson, and Salt-N-Pepa. Freddie’s mother was a huge impact on her musical tastes.

Ross went on to attend Walter L. Cohen High School, where she not only continued to sing in the school choir but also took over as the director of the choir. Because of this experience, she realized that she was capable of writing and producing. Freedia claims that in the beginning she was terrified of performing on stage and needed to be coaxed onto the platform in order to get to the point where she felt comfortable doing so.

In 1998, a teenage drag queen going by the name of Katey Red performed bounce music at a bar that was located close to the Melpomene Projects, which is where Ross spent his childhood. Ross, who had spent his childhood just a few blocks away from Katey Red, started participating in Red’s shows as a backup dancer and singer. In 1999, Katey Red released Melpomene Block Party on taking Fo’ Records, which was at the time the most prominent bounce label in the city.  A close friend gave Freedia the nickname “Freedia,” which she later used as her stage name.

It has been stated by Ross that “I wanted a clever name that rhymed, and my mother had a club named Diva, where I worked. So I decided to combine the two. Because I considered myself to be the ultimate diva, I gave myself the moniker “Big Freedia, Queen Diva.”” 1999 saw the publication of Freedia’s debut single, “An Ha, Oh Yeah,” and the beginning of her extensive performance career throughout a variety of New Orleans clubs, bars, and other venues. Other songs that were popular in the area included “Rock Around the Clock” and “Gin ‘N My System,” the latter of which was sampled by a local rapper named Lil Wayne on one of his mixtapes. In 2003, she debuted with the publication of her debut studio album titled Queen Diva.

Freedia was frequently referred to as an artist while she was active in the “sissy bounce” subgenre, despite the fact that she had remarked that “there’s no such thing as separating it into straight bounce and sissy bounce.”  There is only dance music being played.” [16] Music journalist Alison Fensterstock wrote the following about the singer’s popularity among female concertgoers: “It’s difficult to sing along about bitches and hoes if you’re a girl when Freedia or Sissy Nobby is singing superaggressive, sexual lyrics about bad boyfriends or whatever else. When Freedia or Sissy Nobby are singing these lyrics, there’s something about being able to be the “I” in the sentence. When you identify with Freedia, you become the subject of all of this sexually aggressive behavior rather than the agent behind it.” [12]

After Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans in 2005, Freedia and a number of other bounce artists, including Katey Red and Sissy Nobby, Freedia’s mentee, were compelled to leave the city. Freedia is considered a mentor to Nobby. Freedia ended up relocating to Texas for a period of time, where she started playing bounce shows for the locals and contributing to the promotion of the music in the same way that other displaced bounce artists had done.

The moment she had the chance, she uprooted her life and moved back to New Orleans. Freedia is of the opinion that “Caesar’s was the first club in New Orleans to reopen after the hurricane, and the management immediately gave me a call and suggested that we host a regular night there together. As a result, we initiated FEMA Fridays. It was the only club operating in the city at the time, and a lot of people had a lot of money because to Katrina, the checks, and other things, so the euphoria that was there inside that club is something that I don’t believe will ever return.” During the time that the city was rebuilding, she performed anywhere from six to ten shows each week at block parties, nightclubs, strip clubs, and other places.

It has been stated by Fensterstock that “Freedia was one of the first musicians to return to the studio after the hurricane and go back to work, and she put in an incredible amount of effort. If you lived in this area, it was next to impossible to avoid hearing about who she was.” In 2011, she was nominated for the 2011 22nd GLAAD Media Awards and was awarded the titles of Best Emerging Artist and Best Hip-Hop/Rap Artist at January’s “Best of the Beat Awards.”  Additionally, she was given the award for Best Hip-Hop/Rap Artist. She was given her very own reality program on the Fuse Channel in 2013, which has been documenting her life both while she is on tour and at home. Her autobiography, titled God Save the Queen Diva!, was made available for purchase on July 7, 2015.

Beyoncé surprised her fans in 2016 by releasing a tune titled “Formation,” which sampled Big Freedia’s voice. Freedia appeared towards the tail end of 2016 in a television commercial for a law firm in New Orleans called Juan LaFonta Law Office. In the commercial, she is shown rapping accompanied by bounce music and dancers. 2018 saw the release of her extended play (EP) titled Third Ward Bounce. In April of 2020, Freedia worked on the song “House Party” with New Kids on the Block, Jordin Sparks, Naughty by Nature, and Boyz II Men. The song was written during the period of social distance that occurred during COVID-19. The music video for “House Party” was filmed entirely on mobile devices.

Additionally, Freedia contributed extra vocals to Drake’s top-charting single “Nice for What” in 2018, despite the fact that she is not listed as a featured artist on the song. In the latter part of the 2010s, she became friends with Kesha, and the two of them started working together on each other’s projects. It had been planned that Freedia would go on tour with Kesha in 2020, but the tour had to be postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Relevant ways are provided below to contact Big Freedia.
