Who is Arnold Vosloo?

Arnold Vosloo, a South African-born Hollywood actor, is most known for his portrayal of Imhotep in both the 1999 original The Mummy and its 2002 sequel, The Mummy Returns. The terrorist Habib Marwan in Season 4 of 24; Zartan in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra; and Dr. Peyton/Darkman in Darkman II and Darkman III are just a few of his other notable roles.

Vosloo began his acting career on stage in South Africa, where he went on to win multiple Dalro Awards for his roles in plays including Don Juan, Hamlet, and Môre is ‘n Lang Dag. He soon became a fixture at Pretoria’s State Theatre. In addition to his work on Meisie van Suid-Wes, he has starred in the critically acclaimed Torch Song Trilogy.

In 1984, he began a film career, and he has since won Dalro Awards for his work in films including Boetie and Border toe, in which he co-starred with fellow South African actor Frank Opperman, and Circles in a Forest, released in 1990. Boetie op maneuvers, the sequel to “Boetie,” starring Vosloo in 1986. Besides “Morenga,” “Saturday Night at the Palace,” “Skeleton Coast,” and “The Rutanga Tapes,” Vosloo has appeared in a number more films. After relocating to the United States, Vosloo resumed his acting career with roles in Born in the R.S.A. at Chicago’s Northlight Theatre and Salomé, co-starring Al Pacino, at New York’s Circle In The Square Uptown.

His first role in an American movie was in 1492: Conquest of Paradise. In addition to his portrayal as the titular character in 1999’s “The Mummy” and 2001’s “The Mummy Returns,” he is well-known for his villainous roles in John Woo films starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. As the evil high priest of ancient Egypt in both films, Imhotep was his primary antagonistic role. In the 2003 film “Agent Cody Banks,” Vosloo portrayed François Molay, the primary villain’s henchman.

With “Forgiveness,” released in 2004, Vosloo returned to South Africa to tell the story of a former police officer who tracks down the loved ones of the anti-apartheid activist he murdered. In the 2006 movie “Blood Diamond,” which was shot in South Africa, he played the role of mercenary Colonel Coetzee.

He is the second child of Johan Daniel ‘Deon’ Vosloo and Johanna Petronella. His parents were professional actors, therefore the family moved all across South Africa in search of new performing venues.

Vosloo and his sister, Nadia, moved about with their parents for a while until they finally settled down and the kids could attend a regular school. In Port Elizabeth, his parents operated a drive-in theater. His first acting role was in a school production when he was just seven years old, and it was clear from the start that he had a special gift. He went on to Pretoria Technikon after high school after being medically discharged from the military.

The anti-apartheid theater organization he joined gave him both backstage experience and on-stage performance opportunities. Later on, he joined the Pretoria State Theatre. After beginning his theatrical career at a Pretoria theater academy, he quickly began winning accolades for his acting.
