Ann Matthews Martin grew up in the New Jersey town of Princeton. Her mother, Eden Martin, worked as a preschool teacher, and her father, Henry Martin, was a cartoonist for publications such as The New Yorker and other newspapers. Her mother’s ancestors can be traced back to the pilgrims who embarked on the Mayflower in 1620, according to family tradition. Jane, her younger sister, is also a model.
Having shown an early interest in writing, Martin has continued to pursue his passion. Before she was old enough to write, she would dictate stories to her mother, who would then write them down for her to read later in the day. Astrid Lindgren and Roald Dahl were some of her favorite authors at the time, as were Lewis Carroll, P. L. Travers, Hugh Lofting, and Astrid Lindgren.
Martin enjoyed creative writing in elementary school, and it was in second grade that she realized she had a passion for writing. As a result of her extensive use of notebooks in her spare time, her fourth-grade teacher wrote in her student folder that she would make an excellent writer because she spent so much of her free time writing in them. During middle school and high school, her favorite subjects to study were English and French, and her least favorite was mathematics.
Martin enjoyed working with children when he was a teenager and decided to pursue a career as a teacher. She wanted to work with children who had disabilities, so she spent her summers at the Eden Institute, a school for autistic children in her hometown, where she gained valuable experience. After graduating from Princeton High School in 1973, Martin went on to study at Smith College for four years, finishing in 1977.
She pursued a degree in early childhood education and the psychology of children. Her senior thesis was on the topic of using children’s literature in the classroom, which she completed. She was a resident of Gardiner House and a contributor to the Smith College newspaper, The Sophian. The Smith education Martin received was described as “a place where strong, independent women were encouraged to pursue their goals, both as students and as professors.”
It was her time at Smith that shaped her identity as a feminist, and it also influenced her desire to portray female characters who were similar to the women she had known in her personal life. As of right now, Martin maintains a relatively low public profile. After many years in New York City, Martin relocated to the Hudson Valley in upstate New York, where she enjoys nature and the opportunity to foster kittens for other people.
Martin maintains a Facebook page where she posts semi-regular updates and snapshots of her life. As an author, she keeps herself busy with book signings and adaptations of her works, such as the Babysitters’ Club graphic novels and network television series. Before that, she was in a relationship with Laura Godwin, with whom she co-wrote her books about the Doll People series.
Martin revealed that Godwin was her partner in 2016. In her first teaching job after graduating from Smith College, Martin worked in a fourth- and fifth-grade classroom at Plumfield School in Noroton, Connecticut. Her students, who ranged in age from 8 to 13 years, were affected by learning disabilities such as dyslexia and autism. Martin has stated that her work with children with special needs has had an impact on her writing.
After a year of teaching, Martin decided to pursue a career in publishing. From editorial assistant to senior editor, she worked for several well-known children’s book publishers, including Pocket Books and Scholastic, before starting her own company. She is now a full-time writer who lives in New York City. Martin published her first book, Bummer Summer, in 1983, and it was nominated for the Children’s Choice Award the following year.
When she was working as a children’s book editor for Scholastic in 1985, she began writing the Baby-Sitters Club series for them. The Baby-Sitters Club series was started by Martin, who wrote the first 35 novels in the series. Scholastic then hired ghostwriters to continue the series. She is now concentrating on writing single novels, the majority of which are set in the 1960s, as opposed to multiple novels.
In 2003, one of those novels, A Corner of the Universe, was recognized with a Newbery Honor. This prequel to the Baby-Sitters Club series, The Summer Before, was published in 2010 by author Ann Martin. Her book ideas come from a variety of sources; some are based on personal experiences, while others are based on childhood memories and feelings, as Martin explains.
Several of them are about contemporary issues and struggles. The Baby-Sitters Club and the other characters in her books are all made up, but many of her characters are based on real people, including the author herself. Occasionally, she names her characters after real-life people she knows, and other times she simply selects names that she likes. Martin and her colleagues established “The Lisa Libraries” in 1990 to honor and memorialize their friend Lisa Novak, who died in a car accident in 1989.
This non-profit organization distributes new books to children and helps to establish libraries in underserved areas through its charitable activities. Ann M. Martin also established the Ann M. Martin Foundation in the same year, which provides financial support for art, education, and literacy programs, in addition to programs for abandoned and stray animals. Martin died in 2003. Martin worked as a producer on the Netflix adaptation of The Baby-Sitters Club, which will premiere in 2020.
