Who is Andrew Buchan ?

Andrew Buchan (born February 19, 1979) is an English stage and television actor who is best known for his roles as Mark Latimer in the ITV drama Broadchurch (2013–17), Scott Foster in the BBC political drama Party Animals (2007), John Mercer in the ITV drama series The Fixer (2008–09), and William Garrow in the BBC period drama Garrow’s Law (2009–11).

Buchan grew up in the Bolton neighbourhood of Lostock, having been born in Stockport. During his sixth form years in Horwich, he was head boy at the neighbouring Rivington and Blackrod High School. He worked as a tour guide for Granada Studios during his A-Levels and long before he became an actor, utilising entertaining, unusual tactics to keep people engaged.

He also worked as a bartender at Manchester Airport, a concierge at the De Vere Whites hotel in Reebok Stadium, and a labourer in Italy for a few months.He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Modern Languages from St Cuthbert’s Society, Durham University, in 2001. He went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art after that (RADA).


At the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester, he played Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet (2005). He made his Donmar debut in 2008 in Arthur Miller’s The Man Who Had All the Luck. The play premiered in London for six weeks before embarking on a brief UK tour.

Andrew was named Best Actor in a Touring Production by the Manchester Evening News Theatre Award. He played Bolingbroke in Shakespeare’s Richard II at The Donmar Warehouse in 2011–12. His television career began in 2006, when he starred alongside Matt Smith in the political drama Party Animals as St John Rivers, the vicar.

He starred alongside Judi Dench, Imelda Staunton, and Eileen Atkins in the award-winning Cranford in 2007. He also starred in ITV’s The Whistleblowers in 2007 as Sean Knowles, a teacher, alongside Richard Coyle and Indira Varma. He made his television debut as Dr. Ian Wexler in Season 4 Episode 1 of Bones in 2008.

He played as John Mercer, a paid assassin who targets persons who have gotten away from the law, in the ITV1 drama The Fixer in 2008 and 2009. The Fixer won a Royal Television Society award for Best Series during its debut season.

He starred alongside Kristin Scott Thomas in Sam Taylor-John Wood’s Lennon drama Nowhere Boy in 2009.He played William Garrow in BBC’s Garrow’s Law. The first series premiered on BBC One on November 1, 2009, and was followed by two more.

In the BBC’s two-part Cranford Christmas Special, he reprised his role as carpenter Jem Hearne in December 2009. Buchan starred as journalist Billy Marshall in the made-for-TV film Abroad in 2010, which was based in part on the true-life experiences of Toronto Globe and Mail columnist and novelist Leah McLaren.

On March 14, 2010, CBC Television aired this film in Canada.  In the BBC’s The Nativity, he played Joseph in 2010. On September 8, 2012, Buchan married his long-term partner, actress Amy Nuttall, near their childhood homes in Lancashire, England.

Since 2007, the pair had been dating. Buchan announced the couple’s first child’s arrival in January 2015. In 2013, Andrew appeared in a cameo role alongside Eddie Marsan in the multi-award-winning independent film Still Life. Buchan produced and performed in 1946, a film short based on the life of Hollywood actor Jimmy Stewart, later that year. At the 2014 Williamsburg Independent Film Festival, the film received a Special Jury Award.

Hugo Blick’s hotly awaited political thriller The Honourable Woman stars Buchan alongside Academy Award candidate Maggie Gyllenhaal in July 2014. Both BBC2 and the Sundance channel in the United States broadcasted this.

 

He played Thomas Farriner, the baker from Pudding Lane, in ITV’s The Great Fire, which aired in October 2014. Buchan was cast alongside Bethany Joy Lenz in the TNT drama pilot Home in 2015. Home was never serialised and has never aired.
